Tips to Get a Holiday/Christmas Casual Job

Many retail stores are currently taking applications for the holiday casuals. It’s now time for applications as busy shopping centers in Craigieburn are demanding casual employees.

Development of Employability Skills

Casual roles—predominantly found by students in retail and hospitality— are not just for the sake of making money but also serve as a training ground for critical, lifelong transferable skills, such as:

  • Time Management: Students must learn to organize their day to balance homework, classes, family responsibilities, and work shifts.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Customer-facing roles build strong social skills, adaptability, conflict resolution, and communication.
  • Professional Networks: Entering the labour market early exposes students to industry contacts and potential mentors, easing the transition into full-time employment after graduation.

How to get Casual Work

1. Have your resume ready

Have your resume ready to go. You’ll be applying online and in person so have a couple of printed copies on hand.

2. Keep an eye-out for advertisements and school friends

Most large retailers recruit through their websites, but it’s still worthwhile keeping an eye out for advertisements in shop windows. Check online job boards and ask your family and school friends to let you know if they hear about jobs becoming available, as they might even be able to put a good word for you.

Here are suggestions of stores that you can investigate-  Craigieburn Central

3. Be ready to learn quickly

Christmas casuals are brought in to cover a busy period, so you need to pick up the role quickly if you want to keep getting shifts. That doesn’t mean you should take shortcuts, but the faster you learn, the better.

4. Don’t limit yourself

Just because you’ve never worked in retail before doesn’t mean you shouldn’t apply for a position. Don’t narrow your options out of fear of trying something new.
