Principal’s Report

Welcome to the very first newsletter for Elevation Secondary College!

Our monthly newsletter is named Aspire which highlights the high aspirations that our community has for the education of their children and the future of this school. Aspire complements our school wide behavioural expectations of Aim High, Work Hard and Be Good.

The purpose of this newsletter is to provide a monthly summary of the most important events in the school. In addition to the regular news updates provided on Compass and celebrations on our Facebook page, the newsletter aims to summarise and document our most recent events and successes as a school as well as important upcoming events and notices.

I hope you enjoy the newsletter.

Principal’s Report

2020 has certainly been a historic year. Not only has it been a momentous year for Elevation Secondary College with our official opening and foundation cohort of students beginning their learning journey, but the global challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic have been immense.

We cannot look past the fact that we are living in an era of historic change in the world.

I have no doubt that many members of our community are concerned about what the future holds. Uncertainty about the future can lead to anxiety and other issues. So where there is uncertainty, I encourage all parents and carers to highlight where certainty exists in their children’s lives. Show them the certainty of caring, loving relationships at home and show them the certainty that school provides them, whether face to face or learning from home. Being a teenager is hard. Being a teenager in a global pandemic is even harder. By showing your children these two bedrocks of certainty, you will help them to build resilience for whatever else the future holds.

It would be remiss of me not to talk about some of the highlights of our year so far:

  • First Day of school and grand opening
  • Forming of Student Council
  • Our welcome night BBQ
  • Our first Student Learning Conferences
  • Visit from the Premier Daniel Andrews and Member for Yuroke Ros Spence
  • Harmony Day celebrations
  • First sport team competing
  • Learning Tasks and Reports published

Among many others.

Year 7 Camp

We are waiting on further updates from DET about whether or not school camps will be able to proceed for students from Metropolitan Melbourne.  At this point we still have our booking in place for the last week of term between the 14th and 16th of December. I am hopeful that within the next two to three weeks we will have certainty as to whether school camps are allowed to proceed. We will hold off on postponing this camp for absolutely as long as possible.

School Council

As a new school, Elevation SC formed an interim School Council in late 2019 who have been regularly meeting over the past 12 months to help shape the direction of the school. The interim School Council is made up of: Joanne Brookshaw (President), Samantha Sattler (Vice President), Jade Fau Smith, Kanwarjeet Singh. Myself, Angela Lane and Lexia Collins are the DET representatives.

The interim council was formed under Ministerial Direction in 2019 and will stay in place until early in 2021.

Full School Council nominations and elections will he advertised and held in February and March of 2021. For more information on how this process will work, please contact myself or Lexia Collins.

Year 8 2021

Shortly all families will be receiving Year 8 startup packs in both hard copy and digital format. These packs will include the Year 8 booklist, General Essential Items and School Fees and also an invitation to join our Sustainable School Shop, for second hand uniforms and books.

I would encourage all families to read carefully through the packs when they receive them. Year 8 students will be able to retain much of their Year 7 stationery such as folders etc, and some Year 7 textbooks are also used in Year 8.

School email address change

Many of you will have noted already, but just a reminder that the school email address has changed to: elevation.sc@education.vic.gov.au . For the time being emails sent to the old address will still forward to us, however this will cease next year, so please update your records accordingly.
