Year 9
Elevation Secondary College would like to welcome back Year 9 students for the 2024 academic school year, in what will be a crucial year for their education. In our first week back at school, all students in Year 9 received an introductory presentation which included a reminder about key school policies relating to attendance, equipment, punctuality, uniform, work completion and the policies around mobile phones. ESC asks that if any parent requires clarification of these policies to contact the Mentor Group teacher where they can be explained in more detail.
Our Year 9 cohort have made a positive start to the year and students are enjoying getting their first experience of electives, with classes in forensic science, extension science, visual arts, visual communication, music and many more. We encourage your children to reflect on what subjects they are enjoying in advance of Year 10 subject selection, which will take place later in the year.
Students should have received a consent form to take part in their Morrisby testing earlier this month. If your child has lost their slip, they can request a new one from their mentor group teacher or the Year 9 coordination team. Morrisby testing is a free careers-profiling service run by My Career Insights.
Students who complete the testing will receive suggestions for careers that may be of interest to them, based on their responses to literacy, numeracy and abstract reasoning questions. They will also get questions on their interests and topics they are passionate about. Students who complete the testing will also be eligible for an interview with a professional careers counselor to discuss and unpack their results.
Thank you to those of you who have already returned it!
The Year 9 Team
Many Mentor Group teachers have remained the same and are the first point of contact for parents and everyday needs. But our coordination team looks a little different this year with:
Ms Matina Konstantinakos | Year 9 Level Leader |
Ms Felishia Iannelli | Year 9 Coordinator |
Ms Rebecca Gooch-Andrew | Year 9 Coordinator |
Ms Samantha Abdilla | Year 8-9 Mini School Administrator |
Reminders
- PE uniform is only to be worn on PE days. This is once a week.
- A note must be provided by parents if a student is not wearing an item of correct uniform.
- Laptops are to be charged at home before school the next day.
- Students are to check their compass the night before to prepare for the next day. This will help with important information. If parents can also help this process that would be greatly appreciated.
Year 10
Welcome back to families returning to us and to all new families joining us for 2024. For the returning families, there are plenty of familiar faces in the coordination team, with the addition of the Careers team joining us as well.
The Year 10 team that will be working with you this year is:
Mr James Devlin | Year 10 Level Leader |
Ms Jing Li | Year 10 Coordinator |
Ms Nikita Richardson | Year 10 Coordinator |
Ms Michelle Watt | Careers Practitioner |
Ms Lola Panuccio | Careers Practitioner |
Mr John Tikulin | Careers Teacher |
Work Experience
Work Experience is the short-term placement of secondary school students with employers. During their placement, students will experience what it is like to work in their chosen industry while also having a taste of the world of work in general.
Work Experience is a COMPLUSORY component of the Year 10 curriculum and involves students gaining a placement in industry to broaden their experience and understanding of the world and career opportunities.
Forms that need to be completed are:
- Work experience arrangement form
- Work Experience Guidelines for Employers
- General Safe @ Work Certificate
- Industry Specific Safe @ Work Certificate
- USI Numbers
All forms are due in by the end of Term 1, 2024. Career Office will be the only place that would be accepting work experience forms if ALL DOCUMENTS are completed and put together.
What happens if I don’t complete work experience?
- Parent meeting
- Might be at risk of not successfully completing Year 10
- Subject selection interviews- at risk of not being able to choose subjects you want (either VCE or VCE VM).
- Will be asked to do Work Experience during your own time, on school holidays.
- At risk of not being promoted into Year 11
Until next time.
