Year 9
Preparing for Year 10 and Looking Ahead
As we approach the end of another busy term, it is an exciting time for our Year 9 students as they begin looking ahead to the opportunities and experiences that Year 10 will bring.
One of the key priorities at this time of year is subject selection for Year 10. Students are encouraged to begin thinking carefully about their interests, strengths and future aspirations when considering their subject choices. Year 10 provides an important opportunity for students to explore areas they enjoy, develop new skills and begin considering pathways that may support their future VCE, VET or other post-school goals. We encourage families to have open conversations with their young person about their choices and to seek advice from teachers and the relevant pathways team where needed.
While we look ahead to Year 10, there is still plenty happening for our current Year 9 cohort! Students can look forward to a range of exciting experiences designed to build connection, independence and a strong sense of belonging within our school community.
A highlight on the horizon is City School, which will provide students with an opportunity to step outside the classroom, experience the city and develop their confidence, independence and teamwork. Experiences such as these are an important part of the Year 9 journey and provide students with opportunities to create lasting memories with their peers and teachers.
We will also be holding our Year 9 Assembly in Week 10, providing an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of our students, recognise their growth throughout the year and look ahead to what is still to come. The assembly will be a chance to reflect on the progress our students have made and celebrate the positive contributions they continue to make to our school community.
It is an exciting time to be a Year 9 student. With subject selection complete and a number of memorable experiences ahead, we look forward to supporting our students as they take their next steps towards Year 10 and beyond.

Year 10 Mentor Group Futsal Competition
The Year 10 Mentor Group Futsal Competition has been a fantastic opportunity for students to come together, represent their Mentor Groups and show their teamwork and school spirit. Over the past few weeks, Mentor Groups have competed against each other in some highly competitive games, with large crowds of students supporting their peers and creating a fantastic atmosphere.
As we approach the final stages of the competition, we look forward to seeing which Mentor Group will be crowned the Year 10 Futsal Champions for 2026! Build 10 Program
Students who have been participating in the Build 10 Program at Kangan Institute in Broadmeadows have demonstrated great commitment to developing their skills and preparing for their future pathways.
Through the program, students have been working towards a nationally recognised qualification while gaining valuable practical experience and exploring opportunities for further training and employment.
Well done to all students who have committed themselves to the program and taken positive steps towards building their skills, confidence and career pathways.
Preparing for Exams
Students in Year 10 who are currently completing a Year 11 VCE subject should now be preparing for their upcoming end-of-year examinations. These exams provide an important opportunity for students to demonstrate the knowledge and skills they have developed throughout the year, as well as experience the expectations of senior secondary assessment.
Developing effective study habits now will help students feel more confident and prepared as they transition into Year 11.
Creating a Study Schedule
Breaking study material into manageable sections over the days and weeks leading up to an exam can help students avoid last-minute cramming. Students should allocate specific time to each subject or topic and include regular breaks to maintain focus and prevent burnout.
Active Learning Techniques
Rather than simply reading over notes, students should actively engage with their learning. This could include summarising key concepts in their own words, creating flashcards, completing practice questions or explaining a concept to someone else. These strategies can help strengthen understanding and improve retention.
The earlier students begin preparing for assessments and examinations, the more confident and prepared they are likely to feel. Developing these habits now will also help set students up for greater success in Year 11 and beyond.
Attendance and Holidays
A reminder to families that regular attendance is extremely important, particularly as students prepare to transition into Year 11. Building strong attendance habits in Year 10 helps students develop the routines and commitment required for success in their senior years of schooling.
We ask families to please avoid planning holidays or extended periods away from school during Term 4 wherever possible. Term 4 is an important period for Year 10 students, with examinations, finalising 2027 pathways, Year 11 Orientation and preparation for the transition into senior school.
Every day of learning counts, and maintaining strong attendance will help ensure students finish Year 10 positively and are well prepared for the opportunities and expectations of 2027.
