Regular Assessment Cycle
We would like to remind families that we have several regular ways of giving feedback on how your students are progressing. These include:
- Learning behaviours report. This takes place every three weeks and provides an update on how your child is demonstrating our learning behaviours of Aim High, Work Hard and Be Good.
- Learning tasks. These take place approximately every six weeks (this will be slightly different for VCE students). The grade for students’ recent assessment task will be released via Compass.
- Semester report. A report of all your child’s grades in each subject, a comment for their improvements and their level of achievement is released twice a year, at the end of each semester.
- Student learning conferences. Student learning conferences take place twice a year. This semester, they will be taking place on Wednesday 26th March.
NAPLAN Exams
We would like to notify families of the upcoming NAPLAN exams in Writing, Reading, Conventions of Language and Numeracy which will be taking place for Year 7 and 9 students from March 12th – March 24th. The planned schedule is listed below, please check Compass for a confirmed schedule.

The NAPLAN exams are very important for students. NAPLAN exams give parents an indication of their child’s overall achievement in literacy and numeracy. Elevation Secondary College uses results from NAPLAN exams for a number of purposes, which includes providing advice to students on future pathways such as Year 10 electives and VCE options.
NAPLAN exams are meaningful and require students to prepare and try their hardest. Students will complete a range of preparation tasks in class in coming weeks.
To help students to be ready, we ask that you speak with your child about the importance of taking their NAPLAN exams seriously and trying their hardest on all of them.
We ask that all Year 7 and 9 students bring their laptops and headphones during the testing period, although there are school laptops and computers available for students without laptop access.
NAPLAN exams are non-compulsory on an opt-out basis – if you wish for your child to be withdrawn please contact Rory Henderson on rory.henderson@education.vic.gov.au.

Languages
In Chinese this year, students have continued to explore multiple different topics in their class. Year 7 students have started with an introduction to Chinese New Year and basic greetings in class, and Year 8 students have continued to work on macro skills of speaking for the topic of zodiac animals. Year 9 students have been working on the topic of daily routines and are working to learn how to write a diary in Chinese. The Year 10 students are learning about the topic of clothing and linking it back to previous topics. Our Year 12 students are starting on their SACs and working hard towards their end of year exams.
An exciting opportunity to engage in Chinese culture was also organised for Year 7 and 12 students. A lion dance performance was prepared for the students, in celebration of Chinese New Year. Students had a chance to see the performance up close, and it was great to see students so enthusiastic.
Students can also continue to look forward to the Elevation Speaking and Writing Competitions this year. These will be happening throughout Term 1, and also into Term 2 and 3. We are thrilled to continue working with students in the upcoming year.

Arts
We’ve had a fantastic start to the year in the Art Department, with students engaging in a variety of creative projects. Year 7 students have been experimenting with pastels, charcoal, and coloured pencils while exploring the elements of art. Year 8s have been developing their skills in two-point perspective drawing to design their own houses. Year 9 Visual Communication Design students are designing unique logos for companies of their choice, while Year 9 Art students are refining their grey lead drawing skills by focusing on facial features in preparation for a portrait project. Year 10 Art students have been exploring different drawing materials and shading techniques to create realistic, three-dimensional drawings, and Year 10 Visual Communication students are studying historical design periods to create water bottles inspired by a chosen movement.
Our Year 11 and 12 Visual Communication students have been working hard to analyse designers, write reports, and investigate common design challenges, particularly in the development of headphones. We look forward to seeing our students’ creativity and skills continue to flourish throughout the year!
