Sir John Monash Commemorative Service

Eight Year 9 students had the wonderful opportunity to attend the Sir John Monash Commemorative Service in the Legislative Assembly Chamber at Parliament House. Selected to represent our school, the students commemorated the life, leadership and legacy of one of Australia’s most distinguished military figures.

Curriculum & Learning Report 1

The service provided students with an opportunity to engage with history beyond the classroom, listening to speeches and reflections honouring Sir John Monash and gaining a deeper appreciation of his innovative leadership during the First World War and his contribution to creating the Melbourne we know today. Most importantly, our students represented the school with class, maturity and respect throughout the day. They conducted themselves exceptionally well in the formal setting of Parliament House and demonstrated genuine respect for the significance of the occasion and its guests.

Year 8 Organ Pipes National Park Excursion

Over two days, the entire Year 8 cohort had the opportunity to visit Organ Pipes National Park as part of their Geography unit on Landscapes and Landforms. The excursion allowed students to take their learning beyond the classroom and see first-hand the unique geological features and landscapes they had been studying.

Students explored the park and developed a deeper understanding of how natural processes have shaped the landscape over time. We were also led on a cultural tour by Indigenous Elder Joe, who shared knowledge and stories about the area’s Indigenous history, culture and connection to Country.

The excursion provided students with a valuable opportunity to connect their geographical learning with both the natural and cultural significance of Organ Pipes National Park. It was a fantastic opportunity for students to experience Geography in action while developing a greater appreciation for the landscapes and cultural heritage of this special part of Victoria.

Science Week 2026

Science Week was a great success this year, with the theme “Seeds of Science: Nurturing Knowledge for All.” Across five days, students participated in a range of engaging, hands-on activities designed to spark curiosity, encourage scientific thinking, and foster a greater appreciation for science.

The activities included Bull’s Eye Dissection, Slime Making, the Glitterbug Investigation, Lava Lamps and Fireworks, Science Trivia, and Lab Coat Decorations. These lunchtime activities provided students with opportunities to explore scientific concepts in an interactive and enjoyable environment.

Curriculum & Learning Report 5

Students enthusiastically participated throughout the week and demonstrated their keen interest, curiosity and growing knowledge of science. The high level of engagement highlighted students’ willingness to explore scientific ideas beyond the classroom and collaborate with their peers through practical and creative experiences.

Overall, Science Week provided a valuable opportunity to celebrate science across the school community and nurture students’ curiosity, creativity and enthusiasm for scientific learning.

Extension & Enrichment

Logic Capstone Presentations

The Year 7 and 8 Logic Enrichment Program finished with a bang, with students presenting their Maths Talent Quest group projects to a judging panel.

Congratulations to our winners, Yasameen, Angelina, Saanvi and Japneet, whose project explored “The Decrease of Salaries on the Global Economy After COVID-19.” Their investigation examined the relationship between salaries, inflation and global events such as the COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing conflicts. They concluded that, despite increases in salaries, inflation and other global factors can reduce the real value of workers’ earnings and have a significant impact on the global economy.

Udham, Nicholas, Arham and Amir were our runners-up with their project, “What Will Happen to Global Oil Revenue Within 10 Years?” Their project explored possible future trends in the global oil industry and the factors that may influence oil revenue over the coming decade.

A huge congratulations to all students who participated. Their projects demonstrated impressive research, mathematical thinking, collaboration and communication skills.

A special thank you to Mr Mangione and our guest judge, Dr Juma, for giving their time to judge the entries and celebrate the students’ projects.

Big Science Competition

Well done to the 40 students who challenged themselves in the Big Science Competition this year. The competition gave students the opportunity to test their science knowledge and problem-solving skills against students from across Australia.

A special congratulations to the following students who achieved excellent results:

  • Jasnoor (Year 9) received a High Distinction, ranking in the top 5% of students across Australia. This is the first time a student from Elevation Secondary College has achieved a result this high in a national competition!
  • Akhil (Year 9) received a Distinction, ranking in the top 15% nationally.
  • The following students received a Credit, ranking in the top 40% nationally:
    • Year 8: Udham
    • Year 9: Joshua, Reyance
    • Year 10: Sophia

Congratulations to all students who participated and challenged themselves. Thank you to Ms Brennan and Ms Liu for facilitating this opportunity for our students.

RMIT Workshops

At the beginning of Term 3, staff from RMIT University visited Elevation Secondary College to deliver two hands-on workshops for our students: Pharmacy and Herd Immunity.

Our Year 11 and 12 VET Laboratory Skills students explored the science of pharmacy. They tested the amount of Vitamin C in different juices using indicators and investigated how Gaviscon works in the stomach.

Our Year 7 and 8 Mathematics high achievers explored the mathematics of herd immunity. Students used probability and statistics to investigate how infections spread through a community and how community protection increases as vaccination and immunity levels rise.

These workshops gave students the opportunity to apply their classroom learning to real-world science and mathematics.

A big thank you to the RMIT staff for providing these engaging learning opportunities for our students.

Visual Art

We’re coming to the end of the term, and it’s been a busy few months in the Visual Arts Department. All of our students have now finished Unit 1, and the results have been great, well done to everyone for the hard work and creativity you’ve brought to your art this term.

A special mention goes to our Year 12 VCE students, who will be sitting their exams over the next couple of weeks. We’re proud of everything they’ve achieved this year and wish them all the very best of luck.

Art Club continues to be a really nice and enjoyable space every Wednesday, with students busy painting and working with clay. It’s a relaxed, welcoming environment, everyone is welcome to come along and bring their lunch, it’s simply a space to create and connect with like-minded students.

We’re also really excited to announce that our Art Show will be held in Term 3 Week 6, where student work will be displayed and celebrated. Keep an eye out for more details soon, and enjoy the holidays!
