Assistant Principals’ Report

Social Media Age Restrictions

Social Media age restrictions are coming into effect and we encourage all families to be aware of what they mean. The safety commissioner has a social media age restriction hub to support young people and families for the upcoming changes.

Social media can play both a positive and negative role with teenagers. We urge parents to have a conversation with their child about social media use and how to disconnect, and what the age restrictions mean for them.

We know that overuse of being online can lead to sleep deprivation, negative impacts on mood and behaviour, as well as a decline in face to face interpersonal skills. Teenagers may experience unwanted contact, cyberbullying and be exposed to content that is harmful.

While the school aims to educate our students on factual information with being safe online, home is vital in helping students understand family values and how these might be impacted by being online. Responsible social media use can involve parents having log in details and monitoring their child’s activity. Having a family space to charge phones in the kitchen, living room or similar also allows children (and adults) to get a more restful night’s sleep.

A 2021 research report by the eSafety Commissioner into The Digital lives of Aussie teens says that despite the negative experience “a large percentage of teens continue to ignore potentially harmful experiences or believe nothing will change”. As parents and educators we can put in boundaries and educate teenagers. The eSafety Commissioner site has a range of resources for parents.

Changing Weather

We are heading into Spring which brings wet and rainy weather which can result in hayfever or thunderstorm asthma. If your child experiences hayfever or asthma, make sure they are aware of any treatment in line with a GP’s recommendation.

As we move into the hot summer months, every family should be reviewing their home fire plan – the CFA has a lot of useful resources. A reminder that Elevation Secondary College is a BARR 4 school. You can read more about what this means in the Elevation Community News section.
