Assistant Principals’ Report

What a great start to the year we have had. In particular, we have seen improvements in student punctuality, which has allowed students to become more regulated, learn more and improve their grades. We have also seen improvements in students bringing the correct equipment to class. Pride in the school has also been strong, with uniforms worn in full every day. With the colder weather just around the corner, it may be worth investing in a long-sleeved academic shirt to ensure your child remains warm whilst also following the school rules. It is important to note that the academic jumper is not to be worn with the PE uniform, so make sure to wear a singlet or shirt beneath your uniform if you need additional warmth, keeping in mind that this must not be visible at any stage throughout the day.

Road Safety

As traffic around the school can become quite congested, we remind all families and students to be extra vigilant when crossing the road. Please use designated crossings and be aware of your surroundings at all times, especially during peak drop-off and pick-up times. Safety is our top priority, so we encourage everyone to take extra care and be mindful of other pedestrians and vehicles to ensure a safe journey to and from school.

Assessments

The conclusion of Term 1 is often a time filled with both excitement and nerves for students, thanks to the numerous assessments taking place. Along with NAPLAN, many of our VCE students have recently received their first SAC results, and all students have received their grades for the first Learning Tasks. For Year 7s, this marks the first time they’ve received a grade on an assessment in secondary school.

Whether in Year 7 or Year 12, students typically might experience stress about summative (final) assessments. That’s why it’s essential for both teachers and families to help students manage these tasks and understand their purpose. At Elevation Secondary College, we use grades and percentages to rank and assess student work regularly. Our primary goal is to prepare students for their VCE and post-secondary education or career paths. No matter which path they choose, high-stakes, timed, and ranked assessments will be a significant part of their future studies and professional life. We want students to understand that assessment—whether it’s an exam, assignment, performance review, or competency test—is a regular aspect of life that requires preparation.

Lateness

We appreciate the continued support of families in ensuring that students arrive at school by our designated arrival time of 8:30am. To reinforce the importance of punctuality, we have strengthened our processes and will continue to consistently apply consequences for students who are late three times, either to school or to classes throughout the day. The consequence for being late on three occasions is a centralised after-school detention, helping to hold students accountable for being on time. We value your ongoing partnership as we teach our students the vital skill of punctuality. Arriving on time not only plays a crucial role in their education but also helps them develop valuable life skills for their future as adults.

Attendance

Regular attendance at school is crucial for students’ academic success and overall development. Every day in the classroom is an opportunity to learn, engage with peers, and build essential skills that contribute to their growth. Consistent attendance helps students stay on track with their studies, stay connected to the school community, and develop strong habits that will benefit them in the future. We encourage families to support their children in attending school regularly to ensure they make the most of their education and reach their full potential.

We thank families for your ongoing support of your child’s education. Whether it’s helping them prepare for assessments, ensuring regular attendance, or supplying them with all required uniform and equipment, your involvement plays a crucial role in their success. We encourage students to have a restful holiday period and complete any required homework, so as to allow for the best possible learning experience in Term 2.
