VCE Results

It’s been a wonderful end to the year as we celebrate the achievements of our Year 11 students who undertook an accelerated VCE subject this year. As many of you know, about 35 of our Year 11 students accelerated into a Year 12 subject this year – Media, Psychology and Turkish (via the Victorian School of Languages).

Our first group of Year 12 Study Score results were very strong. We had some very high achievement. Adem Rakipi scored 41 in Media and Shannon Jot Kaur scored a 40 in Media. This puts them in the top 9% of all students studying Media in the state. Zeynep Sivka also scored over 40 in Turkish.

We also had strong consistent performance across the board, with a school median of 30 across Psychology and Media. Media had a mean Study Score of 32.4. While it is very hard for individual students to gain an individual score over 30, achieving a median of 30 is even harder and displays this consistency of achievement.

Congratulations to all of our students who completed one of these subjects for their efforts over the two years. Thanks also to our 2024 subject teachers Jason Stradella and Daniel Mulligan and our Senior School Team for preparing our students.

These results bode well for next year as the whole Year 12 cohort attempts their VCE.

2025 School Captains

I would like to extend my congratulations to our 2025 School Captains Manpreet and Zahna, and Vice Captains Akshat and Thabile.

We welcome this exciting new chapter for our college with their appointment as our inaugural school captains and look forward to the vision and passion they will bring to their roles.

Catastrophic Fire Arrangements

A timely reminder as we head into bushfire season – that Elevation Secondary College is located within a BAR 4 bushfire risk area. This means that if a “Catastrophic” bushfire alert is declared for our area, the school will be directed to close for the length of the catastrophic alert. Should this eventuality arise, it is likely that we would have at least one day’s warning to alert the community.

Best Wishes for the Festive Season

On behalf of the staff at Elevation Secondary College, we would like to wish the whole community a happy and safe festive season.

In 2025, we welcome 30 teachers and seven Education Support staff to Elevation. That brings us to a full complement of staff to match our complete 7 to 12 school. On Tuesday 10 December, we met with new staff to induct them into the college community. New staff actively participated in induction activities and began preparing to perform their 2025 duties at the highest standard. The induction program continues on Day 1 of the school year and continues in professional learning sessions throughout the year.

After a long year, it’s important to look back and reflect. A lot of students have made significant progress in their schooling and are setting themselves up for future success. All students should be asking:

  1. Did I aim high enough that I pushed my abilities and achieved beyond what I thought possible?
  2. Did I set my expectations of myself too low?
  3. Did I let my standards slip and accept ‘good enough’?

Whatever your answers, there is always room for improvement. There are some things that can be done over the summer holiday period to prepare yourself for the next year level in the best possible way.

  1. Complete your holiday homework and read your English novels as soon as you can. The sense of relief to know you now have the holidays to relax from that point onwards can be very satisfying.
  2. Take some time to spend with your family and friends. Term time gets very busy. Take some time to connect and talk with friends and family. Go for a walk, a drive, cook some food together or do something that allows you to talk and spend time together.
  3. Two weeks before school returns, try on your uniform, go shopping for your exercise books, pens, pencils etc. If you have been staying up later than usual, start going to bed and getting up at the same time as you would in term time. For high school students, at least 9 hours is required for the brain to work well. School arrival time is 8:30am, work your way back from there. For most students, they need to go to bed around 9:30pm in order to get enough sleep.
  4. Do a ‘Digital Detox’ – spend some time away from your phone / device. Hours and hours can be lost scrolling aimlessly through pointless videos. Put the phone away for the day and connect with people instead of via devices.
  5. The night before school starts, ensure your uniform is out, your school bag is packed, help out parents/carers to get younger siblings prepared as well so that the morning is less stressful. Decide on your breakfast the night before and make sure you know what you’re having for lunch the next day.

We hope everyone has a restful break and we are excited for the new year, when we have our first full 7-12 school!

Year 7

As we approach the end of the school year, it is with immense pride that we reflect on the incredible journey our Year 7 students have undertaken. This year has been a time of growth, achievement, and resilience, and we couldn’t be prouder of how far they have come.

Celebrating Achievements

In recognition of our students’ outstanding efforts, we held our Awards Assembly on Friday. This special event was an opportunity to celebrate their diligence, academic success, and participation in various activities such as the Chinese Writing Competition, Premier’s Reading Challenge, and consistent attendance. These achievements reflect the hard work and commitment of our students, and we congratulate each one of them for their dedication and perseverance.

A special acknowledgement to Jasnoor (7G) and Akshata (7I), who participated in the Discourse Academic Debate 2024. Both students spoke confidently, eloquently, and passionately. Jasnoor and Akshata both succeeded this semester in tackling Year 10, and even Year 11 content, while maintaining their Aim High, Work Hard and Be Good attitude. Congratulations students on an immense achievement.

Maintaining Momentum

While the end of the year is near, learning remains our top priority. We continue to teach right through to the final day of term, and we encourage all students to maintain their focus and strive for excellence in all their endeavors. We also emphasise living by our school values: Aim High, Work Hard, and Be Good.

Preparing for 2025

The holidays are a well-deserved time for rest and relaxation, and we hope all students and families enjoy this break. It’s also a great time to prepare for the year ahead. Please ensure that uniforms and equipment are ready for the start of 2025 so that students can begin the new school year organised and confident.

Thank You

We would like to thank all families for your support throughout this year. Your involvement and encouragement play a vital role in the success of our students. Together, we have built a strong foundation for Year 7, and we look forward to seeing continued success in Year 8.

Year 8

Reflecting on the Year

Our Year 8 students have shown curiosity, determination, and resilience throughout 2024. Beyond their academic achievements, many have stepped up to lead, whether through school programs or by simply modelling our school values: Aim High, Work Hard, Be Good.

To celebrate these achievements, we held our final awards ceremony, recognising the outstanding efforts and contributions of our students this year. A special mention goes to Daksh Jaiswal of 8E, as well as many other students who have courageously taken on public-speaking roles at assemblies. Daksh has been a dedicated and confident MC throughout the year, and we are so proud of the way he and others have stepped up.

Overcoming Challenges

Year 8 is not without its challenges, but what stands out is how our students have grown through these experiences. From tackling difficult assignments and navigating friendships to trying new activities, these moments have built resilience and character. It has been inspiring to see them embrace challenges and grow stronger because of them.

Looking Ahead

As we bid farewell to 2024, we are already looking forward to the exciting opportunities Year 9 will bring. Programs like the School for Student Leadership (SSL) program, Career Pathways discussions, the City School experience, and more will provide new ways for students to learn, grow, and explore their potential.

Thank You!

To all our families, thank you for your ongoing support throughout the year. From helping keep students on track with their learning or getting your child to school on time, or simply being there to listen, your involvement has been invaluable to their success.

To our amazing Year 8’s – congratulations! You have achieved so much this year, and we couldn’t be prouder of the young people you are becoming.

Wishing you and your families a safe and restful break.

Year 9

Wrapping up 2024

As we near the end of the 2024 school year, it’s a perfect time to reflect on the incredible journey our Year 9 students have undertaken. Each and every student has demonstrated remarkable dedication and growth, successfully completing another milestone in their educational journey.

This year has been about learning, exploring, and continuously challenging themselves to grow in every aspect of life. Through hard work and perseverance, our students have built a strong foundation for their future, equipping themselves with the skills and confidence needed to tackle the challenges ahead.

One of the key achievements this term was completing their first round of exams. This experience exposed our students to formal exam conditions, helping them build confidence and develop skills to better prepare for future academic challenges. We are incredibly proud of the resilience and focus they demonstrated throughout this process.

We would also like to extend our congratulations to all those who received awards at our recent Awards Ceremony. Celebrating achievements with students is always an exciting occasion, but hearing how they encourage and celebrate one another is truly the greatest highlight of all. This sense of community and mutual support is what makes our Year 9 cohort so special.

Additionally, our students participated in a valuable Party Safe presentation run by Victoria Police. This informative session provided them with important knowledge to make safe and responsible choices.

Currently, the students are thoroughly enjoying their four-day City Experience. This immersive program has offered them the chance to explore the vibrant culture of the city, develop independence, and create lasting memories. Watching them embrace every moment has been truly inspiring.

As we celebrate the successes of 2024, we thank our students, staff, and families for their support and dedication. We look forward to continuing this journey together in 2025.

Year 10

Well done to all Year 10 Students that have completed their exams during exam week. It was great to see and hear the students studying so hard and aim high to do their best on exams. Students went from Exams into the Year 11 Orientation classes. Teachers have already provided feedback on the students who have demonstrated an understanding of the amount and level of work required to be successful in 2025 and to have so many students demonstrate this during Orientation is very pleasing.

All 2025 Year 11 students have homework to complete to give them the best possible preparation for the beginning of their senior years.

The 2024 Year 10 team have enjoyed working with and watching all our students grow both personally and academically this year and we look forward to seeing your achievements as your schooling continues. Congratulations and goodbye to many students that have left this year to start their chosen career paths, we wish you all the best in your endeavours.

All the best for your pursuits in 2025!

Year 11

Dear Families,

For our last Senior School Newsletter for 2024, we wanted to say a massive thank you to our students and families for all the support this year.

A few weeks ago, the Senior School had their first ever Teachers Assembly. This was an opportunity in which our students expressed their gratitude and appreciation for their senior teachers. We are hoping to make this part of our tradition in Senior School.

Just a reminder that all VCE and My-VCE students have obtained Holiday Homework over the break. It is essential that students are able to obtain their textbooks to be able to complete this. The Booklist is attached here for Year 11 and Year 12.

We wish all our students and families a safe holiday break. We look forward to seeing our students in 2025!

English & Humanities

This term, Year Seven English have focused on fairytales. Students have enjoyed reading fairytales from all around the world, such as Yeh Shen, The King Who Was Eaten For Breakfast, and Snow White. Afterwards, students wrote their own fairytales- but with a twist! Year Sevens chose different fairytales and subverted elements to create some wacky stories. Using different pens, students had the opportunity to edit their work based on teacher feedback.

In Year Nine Humanities, students explored the different ways that tourism can affect people, culture, and the environment. Students undertook an extensive research task and made posters exploring different countries around the world. Year Nines then learnt about Australian Democracy and completed mock elections for their favourite type of food. At the end of the term, students began preparation for their first exams. Teachers provided students with model answers, practice questions, and feedback, meaning students were well prepared to complete their exams.

Health & P.E.

The year 7 – 10 curriculum included a range of indoor and outdoor sports throughout the year. A range of sports have been added to our program this year to give students a diverse range of participatory and skill development opportunities. The health curriculum included a number of important topics that provide students with lifelong knowledge that can be applied in a variety of contexts.

We also completed our exams for our very first cohort of Physical Education and Human Health and Development (unit 1 and 2). Students most certainly got an insight about the demands and rewards of VCE. As part of the year 11 Physical Education subject, our students had the opportunity to attend the Richmond FC facilities and partake in a  training session with their strength and conditioning team. Following this, we have had 2 students who have been accepted into Richmond’s dual diploma program through Swinburne University.

Aspire News | November & December 2024 Edition 29

We also had the opportunity to play a friendly game of Volleyball against Mount Ridley College.

Part of our work in the Year 10 Health and PE space allowed us to take students to the road to zero experience in Melbourne Museum. This had a focus on road safety and impacts of advertising, which is particularly important before our students start driving.

Technologies

The Technologies at Elevation Secondary College have finished off strong as we strive towards exploring the best in this technology-driven world.

In Food Technologies Ms Gorham and Mr Maher have orchestrated our Year 7 students in designing and serving their own Toasties, and the Year 10 students working on their baking as they created festive cupcakes, complete with icing and edible decorations.

Product Design with Mrs Vella has seen our second batch of Year 8 students go through the design thinking process as they generate prototypes of toys using the College’s 3D Printers. Thank you Mrs Vella for single-handedly printing over 150 3D designs for the students in a matter of weeks, and well done to the students for iterating their designs.

Digital Technologies across Years 7 to 11 have finished the year with our inaugural VCE Applied Computing students wrapping up Unit 2, our Year 9 and 10 Digital Technologies students finishing off their final assessments on network and website design, and Year 7 and 8 students putting their coding skills to the test as they program Lego EV3 robots and BBC Micro:Bit devices.

Arts

As we end the year, students have been busy creating amazing work across the arts.

Year 7 Visual Arts students combined science and art in a mixed media project. They made booklets showing their experiments with ink and drawings of bones using charcoal and pastels.

Year 8 Visual Arts students finished designing game posters. Some chose existing games, while others invented their own. Their fantastic work is now displayed in the front office.

Year 9 Art students explored both 3D and 2D creativity, starting with wire sculptures of sea creatures and finishing with cardboard animal heads. These projects encouraged students to think outside the box and develop their skills in different materials.

Year 9 VCD students worked on designing bedrooms and drew them in isometric format. This project challenged their spatial awareness and technical drawing abilities, preparing them for more advanced design work.

In Media, Year 9 students completed their podcast unit. They picked topics, wrote scripts, and recorded their podcasts using professional equipment. Topics included famous singers, sports, and murder mysteries.

In Music, the year ended with a big celebration at Music Night. Students from Years 7 to 11 performed songs for their families, teachers, and friends. The performances were outstanding, and everyone was so proud of their effort and talent.
