Year 7 and 8 Library Sessions

This term marks the start of regular library sessions for all year 7 and year 8 English classes. The classes, held fortnightly, involve sustained silent reading and working on reading journals. Reading is a powerful tool for personal development that has benefits across all subjects. As well as expanding horizons through exposure to new ideas and perspectives, reading also helps students to think critically and solve problems.

These reading and journaling sessions will encourage consistency, help students understand what they are reading, capture their developing responses over time and show how they are improving. In addition to these sessions, it is recommended that all students read for at least 30 minutes a day. Developing a good reading habit early in the schooling timeline is crucial to students’ success, particularly in preparation for the senior years.

The library is open during breaks should students need to borrow a book, and book requests are always welcome. To make requests, students should go to the library website (via the Elevation saved bookmarks tab, or the star menu on compass) and add their request to the embedded Padlet.

Borrowing:

  • Students may borrow up to 4 books at a time
  • 2 week borrowing period (students may speak to Ellen to renew loans)
  • Returns chute is to the right of the library entrance
  • Students can check their borrowing record on the library website

Library Lovers Day

On the 14th of February the library celebrated Library Lovers Day with a ‘Blind date with a book’ display. BDWAB allowed students to pick up a book they might not otherwise, as the covers and blurbs were obscured. The books on display were wrapped in brown paper, with the only hint to their contents being a few dot points regarding the focus and themes of the book. Sometimes the tyranny of choice can be overwhelming – so many books, so little time – and BDWAB is an experiment in book discovery that removes some of the variables that we usually base our choices on.

Borrowing Rules:

  • Students may borrow up to 4 books at a time
  • 2 week borrowing period (students may speak to Ellen to renew loans)
  • Returns chute is to the right of the library entrance
  • Students can check their borrowing record on the library website
